Homelessness is often misunderstood. At first glance, it may appear to be a single issue, but in reality, it’s the result of multiple, overlapping challenges. At KiP Telford, we work directly with people facing homelessness every day, and one thing is clear: there is no single reason why someone becomes homeless.
In the UK, homelessness has been steadily rising. According to Shelter, over 271,000 people were recorded as homeless in England in 2023, including 123,000 children. These figures do not capture the full scale of the problem, as they exclude people who are sofa surfing, staying in temporary or unsafe accommodation, or who are uncounted by local authorities.
Common Causes of Homelessness in the UK
At KiP, we believe that to tackle homelessness, we must first understand it. These are some of the most common reasons we see:
1. Relationship Breakdown
A breakdown in personal relationships, due to family conflict, domestic violence, or separation, is a leading cause of homelessness. When a relationship ends, one or more people may be left with nowhere to go.
In particular, young people are often forced to leave home due to irreparable family issues.
2. Mental Health Challenges and Addiction
Many people who experience homelessness also face mental health difficulties. Depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other conditions can make it hard to manage housing, employment, and relationships.
Substance misuse is often both a cause and a consequence of homelessness, frequently rooted in trauma. The lack of accessible mental health services further compounds the problem.
3. Job Loss and Low Income
Unemployment or the loss of stable income can rapidly lead to homelessness. Without savings or family support, many people are just a few paychecks away from being unable to afford rent or essentials.
Even those in work are not immune. Insecure jobs, zero-hour contracts, and low wages often mean people cannot keep up with the cost of living.
4. Rent Increases and Evictions
Across the UK, the cost of private renting has skyrocketed. In the West Midlands, average rents rose by over 9% in 2023 alone. This rise, coupled with stagnant wages and increasing utility costs, has pushed many households into arrears.
The number one cause of homelessness in England today is the end of a private tenancy, often through a no-fault Section 21 eviction. Tenants can be forced to leave through no wrongdoing of their own, and many find it impossible to secure another affordable home.
